H.E.R.O - Urgent Care for Haiti 's dying Children !

Mission Statement:

Goals HERO must reach to accomplish its mission

The mission of HERO is to “make life better for Haiti’s dying children.”

HERO is working to alleviate the alarming crises confronting the children in the area of food security, economic development, primary health care, emergency management, relevant education, and to provide spiritual comfort.”

HERO employs a five point strategy, tailored to local needs, in order to implement the mission of our organization.
Food security:
Haiti is the third hungriest nation in the world, behind Somalia and Afghanistan. Every hour many Haitian children are dying of starvation before reaching the age of 5.
Education and Youth Empowerment
Only about 30% of Haitian children ever begin school, and of the 30%, only 2% stay in school beyond the 5th grade (www.webster.edu). There are about one million children and youth out of school because of poverty. Recently HERO paid full year tuition for 35 school-age children in order for them to afford school this year.

Emergency Preparedness / Management:
Haiti lies in the middle of the hurricane belt. According to the United States Central Intelligence Agency, Haiti is “subject to severe storms from June to October; occasional flooding and earthquakes; periodic droughts in the country, extensive deforestation (much of the remaining forested land is being cleared for agriculture and used as fuel); soil erosion; inadequate supplies of potable water.” (CIA, www.cia.gov, 2007) HERO will implement emergency preparedness and management training programs in concert with other world emergency organizations to teach institutions, schools, and citizens how to be prepared in case of an emergency. Materials such as helicopters, ambulances, special utility trucks, and communications tools are essential and are in great need.

Health and Quality of Life Empowerment:

HIV/AIDS kill more than 30,000 people each year and more than 200,000 become orphans.
There are only 1.2 doctors, 1.3 nurses and 0.4 dentists for every 10,000 Haitians. HERO will establish a database for volunteer medical students and medical doctors. Through that database, HERO will conduct yearly medical mission trips in order to train Haitian medical students and volunteers which in turn will train Haitians how to live better, healthier lives. This program will include hygiene, HIV-AIDS education and awareness, tuberculosis among others.

Economic Empowerment:

Empowering all people in attaining economic self-sufficiency through job training, Learning English, entrepreneurship and help them to live more productive lives.
On the eve of the 19th century, Haitians played their part in the advancement human liberty. Now it is our part to help them achieve theirs. They are worthy of our support.

Meeting the Needs: Short term Projects

HERO is embarking on its second humanitarian mission to help Haitian dying children. We welcome your financial support as we work to deal with the emergencies confronting these children in areas such as food security, primary health care and education. Be a HERO today. Help rescue a child from starvation and preventable diseases. In the last year’s mission trip, HERO was able to finance the education of 35 children for one full year. With your help this year, we want to bring 3 laptops for mini technology center and be able to sponsor 70 children.

May God continue to bless you as you bless the most vulnerable in the world.

Simeon Nerelus,

President

The inspiration of what would become HERO first came to Pastor Simeon Nerelus in 1997. It was  in the spirit of Haiti's bicentennial (2004) and the imminent Second-Coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus-Christ. Pastor Nerelus wrote this story in his book. You may want to get a copy. This site was created out of the necessity to have a reference place so that responsible people and organizations of the world can unite and help reduce the poverty, misery and death in Haiti.
